The Shack....

"This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” did for his. It’s that good!” Eugene Peterson said that about this book, i like Peterson, i like his books and yes i kind of like The Message but on this occasion i think he is wrong. One thing i should state is that i do not read "Christian fiction," ever! This is "theological fiction" though so I have made an exception for the book that is causing quite a stir and has caused many "high profile" people to applaud it. I am aware that God is portrayed as an African-American woman in the story. Jesus is a young to middle-aged man of Middle-Eastern descent with a big nose and rather plain looks while the Holy Spirit is played by Sarayu, a small, delicate and eclectic woman of Asian descent. In the book, this is the Trinity! What do we make of this? It is likely that the book is going to continue to sell so many copies that its popularity alone will become its endorsement. I have learnt in the past about posting bad or incomplete reviews of books so it is likely i will not mention The Shack again. I also am well aware that this is old news for many folks, the book is being talked about a LOT online, its being praised by many and chopped up by others so take my advice if you want to read an in depth and very good review of the book, go here.

What do you think?

Hey, Simbo. Interesting comments. I had this discussion at dinner last Friday night with a friend who also happens to be my pastor. He has noticed that people who are currently struggling with life-issues seem to like the book a lot. Others who aren't currently in crisis are like you and me -- not too crazy about it. So far, it seems a pretty accurate correlation.

Be careful that you don't fall into the same trap that many seem to with that quote of Eugene Peterson's. I highly doubt that he was comparing the two as literature since there is no comparison. My guess is that he was making a comparison about their draw in terms of their relative ability to present a compelling case for God to each generation. In that I believe Mr. Peterson is correct.

I have read the book and liked it. It may not be completely accurate or all true, but it opens your mind to be able to see a beautiful new picture of what God is/can be like. I like to be stretched and challenged, and this book did that for me.

Leslie, my only problem with that is that God is not as the book portrays, we do not knwo what God looks like and to say he is as the book suggests or that he can be like the book suggests is a problem for me.................though i do take your point

I need to read it. I am one of those people where if everyone is doing it I don't do it. Maybe this time I will. H

I'm just impressed how you managed to do this whole blog post without really giving your thoughts and opinions on it. Pretty impressive - you should think about getting into politics!
